Diameter - The shank diameter and not the diameter of the screw head.
Threads Per Inch - Example: A screw that’s a #12-14 is a #12 diameter with 14 threads per inch.
Length - Starts from the underside of the head and includes the drill point & sealing washer. The head style is included in the length on countersunk fasteners only.
Head Style - The most common metal roofing screws are hex head, hex washer head, and pancake head.
Drill Point Style - Self-drilling, self-tapping, and self-piercing
Material - Carbon steel and stainless steel are the two most common.
Coating - Galvanized screws are the most common. The screw head is usually painted the same color as the metal panels.
Sealing Washers - The screws will either have a rubber sealing washer for weather-tightness or will not.
Types Of Metal To Metal Roofing Screws
Screws that fasten the sidelap of the metal panels or attach the trim and flashing.
Screws that attach to light gauge metal such as metal purlins.
Screws that attach to heavy steel joists, I-beams, or steel tubes.
Common Screw Sizes for Metal Roofs
1 1/2-inch Screws
For metal roofing projects, it's typical to use 1 1/2-inch screws with a 1 1/4-inch depth to securely fasten the panels. If the roofing sheets are thicker, sizes such as 1-inch or 2-inch screws may also work.
2-inch Screws
To ensure proper installation, use 2-inch screws for roofing projects that involve overlapping panels or 7/8-inch corrugated panels. These screws are long enough to penetrate two panels and provide enough depth in the substrate.
1-inch Screws
For standing seam roofing projects, the standard screw size is 1 inch. These screws can securely hold by penetrating up to 3/4 inches into the substrate.

Carbon Steel
It has a low cost and its strength can be adjusted. It is used for general connections and some load-bearing occasions.
Stainless Steel
It has strong corrosion resistance and a bright appearance. It is used in corrosive environments and places with high requirements for appearance.
Alloy Steel
It has high strength and good toughness. Its performance can be further optimized through heat treatment. It is used for high-load connections.
